Enola Gay Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Paul Tibbets B29Good evening. If you were going to purchase an autographed photo of paul tibbets, pilot in command of the b29 enola gay on august 6th, 1945 and commander fo the 509th composite group this would be the photo. It was taken by bendix aviation tech rep.
George staley who was one of many tech. Reps assigned to the 509th composite group. He was originally sent to wendover when the group was formed and wore an officers uniform. Bendix supplied the fuel system to the b29s and it was his job to train and assist the flight engineers. George had purchased a used leica camera and had several rolls of color slide film.
He was never told about the mission of the group. He first headr about the bomb on the radio, hearing presidents truman's speech. Approximately 5 hours later, in his assigned jeep and with camera was allowed on teh flight line and took this color slide photo.
Thsi photo was reproduced from the original slide which has since been donated to the smithsonian. The photo is 8 x 10, with an image size of 6-1/2 x 9-3/4. I knew paul tibbets and asked him to autograph the photo as pilot to hiroshima.
The photo was autographed at least 8 years ago when his autograph was stil good and bold. The autograph is actual, real, not a scan, copy or forgery. The b29 that is in the background is the bockscar which flew hte second mission 3 days later. Gen. Spaatz has just pinned the dsc on paul tibbet's flight suit while gen. Ramey, commander 313th wing looks on. For provenance, i have attended all reunions of the 509th composite from and including 1990 -2008. I have been reunion chairman 2001-2006 and again in 2008 and for 2009.
